I am the Project Director for Barton Malow Company, responsible for our North Florida Operations. We recently had the good fortune to work with Scott Farrell and Farrell Brothers Marine Construction while building the University of North Florida Osprey Dining Facility. This $15m project was faced with a significant obstacle during construction; sited on the banks of Candy Cane Lake, our building displaced all pedestrian access from the dormitories to the central part of the campus. We engaged Farrell Brothers to help design and construct a temporary pedestrian boardwalk around our site and over Candy Cane Lake.

Using the design-build approach, Farrell Brothers was able to work together with their structural engineer, electrical engineer, and material suppliers to design and price a sustainable, safe boardwalk to suit our needs. This approach saved a significant amount of time by allowing basic materials to be ordered and delivered while final details were being developed and approved.

In addition to speed, the design build approach utilized by Farrell Brothers proved to be very flexible. During approval, the owner requested several variations on the overall width of the boardwalk. Because the designers and builder were all one team, they were able to quickly refine the design and provide accurate cost information necessary for the owner to make a decision.

Finally, Farrell Brothers attention to detail and craftsman-like approach resulted in superb structure. UNF has decided to make the boardwalk a permanent feature and will continue to utilize it once the project is complete.

I recommend Farrell Brothers Marine Construction and their design build approach to anyone contemplating a marine structure, dock, bulkhead or boardwalk. They have provided great value and their client service is above reproach.
